Get Connected
Welcome to the SEISMIC Collaboration! Whether you are from a SEISMIC Institution, are interested to bring your institution into SEISMIC, or just want to know more, we encourage you to check out our website to learn more about the work we are doing. Below, we break down how you can participate in SEISMIC, depending on your interests and institutional affiliation. First, we strongly recommend you sign up for our SEISMIC Newsletter. This is the one form of communication we send to everyone who has expressed interest in SEISMIC and is the best way to stay regularly updated.
Individuals at SEISMIC Institutions
If you are affiliated with one of our SEISMIC institutions, you are automatically able to participate in our collaboration. Our SEISMIC Institutions are:
- Arizona State University
- Indiana University
- Michigan State University
- Purdue University
- University of California Davis
- University of California Irvine
- University of California Santa Barbara
- University of Michigan
- University of Minnesota
- University of Pittsburgh
Read our SEISMIC Getting Started Guide for a quick overview of our structures and the different ways you can be involved. Decide at what level you want to be involved (1: Breaking News, 2: Aftershock, 3: Earthquake, 4: Epicenter) and follow the next steps described in the Guide.
Individuals at Non-SEISMIC Institutions
If you are not affiliated with one of our SEISMIC institutions, you must apply to be an External Participant to be able to participate in SEISMIC. An External Participant is any person from a non-SEISMIC institution that participates in the SEISMIC collaboration. This person does not have any prior commitments to SEISMIC. External Participants must join SEISMIC through a key project or additional project. The Collaboration Council (CoCo) will review External Participants each year to confirm they are still valuable to the collaboration. Every External Participant must have a sponsor from an existing SEISMIC institution.
If you are interested in participating in SEISMIC, first check out our list of projects to see which one you would like to join. Then, email the project lead(s) to indicate your interest in their project. In this email, please address the following questions:
- Why do you want to join this specific SEISMIC project?
- What would you bring to SEISMIC?
The project lead(s) will then decide whether to approve your participation in the project. If they do, they will pass on your email to the CoCo, who will make final approvals. Once the CoCo approves your participation, you will join SEISMIC as an External Participant. At this time, make sure to email seismic.admin@umich.edu to make sure you are added to all appropriate communications.
